When I think of Bill Bandy, I am flooded with happy memories of my childhood. Camping. Fishing. Four wheeling. Boating. Birthdays. Graduations. We Fireworks. Campfires. We called him billy goat because he always ate the potatoes raw. I tried them but opted to wait till they were cooked. He was a friend of my dads and was around a lot. Like an uncle. I remember him patiently but rather unsuccessfully trying to teach me to water ski. My dad at the wheel and Bill at the end of the rope with me. He coached me to keep my little legs straight and hold on to the rope tight but to let go as soon as you fall. That was an important detail I learned probably more from experience than the coach. I made it up a few times but not for long. I realize that my childhood sounds like a Toby Keith song right now. My redneck flag is flying but that’s ok. That’s the Bill I choose to remember. The life of the party who danced with me at my wedding and would help a friend if he could. He was a man with some fierce demons but a kind heart. I loved him.
