Andy was a "miracle baby". He was diagnosed with hydranencephaly – a rare neural tube defect - at birth. He was given a prognosis of weeks to months, and his parents were told he would be deaf and blind – he would never be able to respond and never be more than a newborn in ability. After much prayer and discussion and with a leap of faith baby Andy was brought in to the Allen household – fitting in easily amongst the chaos of a large family. There were always arms to hold him and mouths to kiss him and sing to him. He was able to thrive in this environment and surpassed all of the doctors' expectations. He
was not deaf or completely blind, and he was able to smile and coo when he was happy and cry when he needed attention. Although unable to sit up, talk, crawl, or walk, and born missing the majority of his brain, he was able to teach those who knew and cared for him many things: Compassion, Patience, Love, Faith, Hope, Kindness, Joy, and that ANYONE has the ability to change the lives of others for the better if given the chance.
He will be missed greatly, but there is no doubt he is enjoying the freedom from his broken, earthly body and flying amongst the angels in Heaven. "We will see you again soon, Baby Boy. We love you!"
The Allen family would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to all the staff and volunteers of Community and Providence Hospices, the staff of the
Hospice Houses – South and West, Gigi Barnes and Nina Dowden of Klara's
Children's Center/ECI in Waco, Jan Bailey of Hill County SSA/Vision Services, United Rehab Services of Waco, Tower Medic DME, Cleburne
Drug, The Catholic Renewal Center of Ft. Worth, Jason Hardcastle, Dr.Sondra Bowser, Dr. Carol Beyer, Dr. John Honeycutt, and especially our family, friends, and community. Without all of you, raising Andy would not have been possible. It takes more than a village to raise a special-needs child – it takes a metropolis – for all your help, prayers, and words of encouragement we are grateful!
