Bertha Rae Lain

On January 24, 2018, in Mansfield, Texas beloved Bertha Rae Lain (née Bradberry), in her 97th year, went to be with the Lord. Bertha Rae was born June 23, 1921 in Cleburne, where she spent most of her life. Her early years were spent in Chicago, Ill. She later graduated from Cleburne High School, where she met her husband Thomas Edwin Lain. They were married in Seattle in 1942 where Edwin was an officer on a U.S. Navy vessel. They were married almost 60 years before his passing.
As a wife, mother, sister-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother, Bertha Rae enjoyed spending time with her family. Her other interests included sewing, gardening, reading, working puzzle books and watching the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs baseball games. Bertha Rae’s favorite avocation however, was breeding, raising, and being around dogs. She specially enjoyed showing Cairn Terriers which took her to locales all around the United States. Bertha Rae, Edwin and their dog-loving friends in the 1970s became the founding members of the Trinity Valley Cairn Terrier Club and the Nolan River Kennel Club. In her various roles as an officer and member of the clubs, she helped bring dog showing to the Cleburne area and loved the many events, meetings, and activities spent with her friends—human and canine. Bertha Rae and Edwin were also long-time members and officers of the Fort Worth Kennel Club.
In 2016 Bertha Rae relocated to Cedar Bluff Assisted Living in Mansfield, Texas where she continued to make new friends, play games, watch classic movies, and spend time outdoors in the courtyard. Bertha Rae’s kind heart, soft-spoken way, and polite manner will be greatly missed by her many friends and staff, and her family.
Bertha Rae was pre-deceased by her husband Thomas Edwin Lain, her brother Carl Bradberry and her daughter-in-law Jeannene L. Lain. She is survived by her son, Thomas Lain Jr.; two grandchildren, Rhonda Horner and husband, Daniel, and Richard Lain and wife, Collette; and three great-grandchildren, Katie Rae, Julia, and Aaron Lain. She is also survived by her good friend and sister-in-law Mary Purcell, and several nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service will be held Sunday, February 11th at 1pm at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Cleburne.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name, may be made to Happy Hill Farm, 3846 N. Highway 144, Granbury, Texas 76048, or the First Baptist Church in Cleburne, Texas.
