Betty Mendell

Service for Betty Jean Garnand Mendell, 86, of Cleburne will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Monday, May 19, 2014 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. The Reverend Mike Mizell will officiate. Graveside service will follow at 1:00 P.M., Monday, in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas. Pallbearers will be Richard Sturgeon, Caleb Virden, Will Kimes, Brent Shields, Stephen Dodd, and Makenzie Richardson.

Visitation will be from 6-8:00 P.M., Sunday, at the funeral home.

Betty Jean Garnand Mendell was born September 3, 1927 in Humbolt, Kansas to Lister Armsted Garnand & Alvarah Viola Williams Garnand and was their only child. She passed from this life May 15, 2014 in Cleburne, Texas surrounded by her loving family. Betty was an extremely independent woman, who was both compassionate and strong willed. She graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in Home Economics. Betty married William Robert Mendell on June 5, 1949 in Wichita, Kansas. She was a wonderful mother to two daughters and fulfilled the multifaceted role of homemaker for most of her life.

Mrs. Mendell was a very skilled seamstress and had an incredible green thumb. Her backyard was always filled with an array of flowers and various plants that flourished under her care. Many afternoons she could be found relaxing in her favorite chair enjoying a mystery novel or the challenge of a crossword puzzle. When her daughters were young she was very involved with the Dallas Camp Fire Girls, which lasted more than 12 years. In her later life Betty developed a successful career at both Sears and Mary Kay Cosmetics in the bookkeeping department. Betty had a wry sense of humor that she was often unaware of, however it brought much comic relief to her family and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Ann Mendell Gruner & her husband Larry Dean Gruner, and Karen Kay Mendell Sturgeon & her husband Richard Dale Sturgeon; five grandchildren, Brandy Michelle Gruner Kimes & her husband William Andrew Kimes, Courtney Robyn Gruner, Kaitlin Renae Sturgeon, Lyndsey Nicole Sturgeon, and Richard William Sturgeon; and a host of other relatives and friends.
