Dr. Billy Gerald Mills passed away on June 22, 2014, at the age of 81. Service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 2, 2014 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. The Elder Larry Moore will officiate. Burial will follow in Keene Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 P.M., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Dr. Mills is survived by Joyce, his loving wife of 49 years. They were married in Hugo, OK, on July 9, 1965. Dr. Mills is lovingly remembered by his five children, Susan LaFever, Graig Mills, Angie Douglass, Mandy Griffin, and Zachary Mills; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sibling, Dr. Charles Mills. Dr. Mills will also be lovingly remembered by other countless nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, co-workers, patients, and others he came in contact with.
Dr. Mills was born in Bayou la Batre, AL, on January 16, 1933, to the late Robert O. Mills and Vernie B. (Owens) Mills. After graduating high school in 1951 in Mobile, AL, Dr. Mills served 4 years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. Upon leaving the service, Dr. Mills enrolled at Southern Missionary College in Chattanooga, TN, to complete the requirements for admission to medical school. And, in 1962, Dr. Mills graduated from Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery in Kansas City, MO, earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O) degree. Dr. Mills then moved to the Dallas, TX, area, where he met Joyce, completed residency, and practiced medicine for over 40 years, primarily at his office in Mesquite. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Mills also served in the United States Air Force Reserve for many years as a Flight Surgeon, ultimately retiring with over 20 years of service at the rank of “Full Bird” Colonel.
Dr. Mills was a physician, but that only made up a small part of who he was. If he was not treating patients, he was herding cattle, flying his plane, traveling, spending time with his friends and family, or watching his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide play football, who he loved ever since he listened to them on the radio as a boy. Dr. Mills was a one of a kind person who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
