Charles Atkins

Charles Gary Atkins (Gary), 77, of Cleburne, Texas passed away Friday, March 31, 2023 in Cleburne while under Hospice care. He was born on May 29, 1945 in Hillsboro to Charles Bradford Atkins and Priscilla Honeycutt Atkins. On June 12, 1981, Gary married Madelyn Kay Sims, and in 2022 they celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.

He accepted Christ as a child and kept his faith throughout his life. He enjoyed southern gospel music and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cleburne. A couple of days prior to his passing he said, “I’m ready to see my LORD.”

Gary was a charismatic and friendly man, whether selling used cars, mobile homes, or as a record-breaking loan officer at World Finance. People loved him, and his customers were more like friends. They would bring him small gifts, homemade treats, and exchange lively conversation.

His hobbies included singing, fishing, and camping at the Brazos River with his family. A devoted and fun-loving father, he was quick with the practical joke and thoughtful in planning family vacations. Though the miles may have been many, he was always close to his children; and attended every joyous occasion and every medical emergency that he could for them. Most recently, he attended his youngest daughter’s 40th birthday party last August, and he was so happy to have shared that moment in her life. He was always interested in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He was meticulous about remembering birthdays with a card and small check. He never missed an opportunity to tell them he loved them, and he always prayed for them every night.

Gary was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his wife, Madelyn Atkins, of Cleburne; children, Janet Baggett and her husband, Mike, of Dublin, Georgia; Bonnie Glass and husband, Sid, of Macon, Georgia; Charles Gary Atkins, Jr. and wife, Christy, of Forsyth, Georgia; and Jennifer Atkins of Euless; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, Don Atkins and wife, Regina, of Austin; and Kenneth Atkins and wife, Cheryl, of Grapeland; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Rather than flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions be given to Camp Fire Tesuya Council, 815 N. Main Street, Cleburne, Texas 76033 in loving memory of Gary Atkins.
