Service for Charles Ray Fowler, 80, of Rio Vista, will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 4, 2011 in the First Baptist Church of Rio Vista. The Reverend Paul Pinyan and the Reverend Neale Oliver will officiate. Pallbearers will be Nathan Fowler, Nolan Fowler, Nevin Fowler, Kyle Fowler, Alec Fowler, Jacob Stanley and Rick Cumins. Honorary pallbearers will be the First Baptist Church of Rio Vista Deacons, the Men II Sunday School Class and the Rio Vista Fire Departement. Burial will be in the Rio Vista
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, at the funeral home.
Mr. Fowler passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 in Rio Vista. He was born February 17, 1931 in Johnson County to Claude Burton and Maggie Lee Tucker Fowler. He married Mary Frances Hardin on December 21, 1951 in Rio Vista.
Charles Ray served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class, having served one year in Korea.
Charles Ray was employed at General Dynamics for 13 1/2 years, Santa Fe Railroad shops for one year and Bell Helicopter Textron, from which he retired after 28 years.
Charles Ray has served the community of Rio Vista in many different capacities. He was ordained as a deacon of the First Baptist Church in 1959, where he has served as Chairman of the Deacons for many years. He served as city councilman from 1967-1973. He has served on the Rio Vista School board from 1972 to 1984.
In 1957, Charles Ray joined as a volunteer in the Rio Vista Fire Department, and served for 50 years, holding different offices in the department.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Fowler; three sons, Burton Fowler and wife Patti of Decatur, AL, Kenneth Fowler and wife Melody of Cleburne and Kerry Fowler and wife Lauri of Lewisville; one daughter, Sherry Stanley and husband Jerry of Rio Vista; sister, Dorothy Lucus of Rio Vista; ten grandchildren, Nathan Fowler and wife Jennifer, Nolan Fowler, Nevin Fowler, Kyle Fowler and wife Andrea, Audrey Fowler, Nicole Hamilton, Alec Fowler, Claire Fowler, Jacob Stanley and Sara Stanley. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Claude and Billy Glynn Fowler; sister, Margie Hall and granddaughter, Marissa Fowler.
