Graveside services for Charles Burnett Lyon will be held at Rosehill Cemetery at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, December 29. Visitation will be held at Crosier Pearson Funeral Home from 10 AM to 12 PM on the day of the services.
The world lost a true gentleman when he passed away at home with family on December 25, 2015 at the age of 91.
Mr. Lyon was born December 3, 1924 to John Morgan Lyon and Charity Kyle Lyon in Bosque County, Texas. He joined the US Navy in 1941 and served as a Radioman aboard US Navy search aircraft until he left the service in 1949. He had many stories of his active Navy years, including his participation in the flyover of Tokyo Bay during the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri and riding out a typhoon on Saipan then finding his aircraft in one piece at the bottom of the bay the next day.
He was a long time member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, formerly Anglin Street Methodist Church. He served as the Chairman of the Building Committee for Wesley.
He was an avid fan of trains, planes and automobiles. He was a licensed pilot and served on the committee to move the airport to its present location. His other hobbies included country and western dancing and Texas history. His interest in Texas history was piqued after a brief early life introduction to Bonnie and Clyde on the back roads of Bosque County.
Mr. Lyon retired from Santa Fe Railroad after serving as an electrician for 32 years. He is also a retiree of the US Navy Reserve.
His siblings, Louise Heeter and Harvey Lyon, predeceased him.
He was married to the love of his life, Frances Shelton of Grandview, Texas from February, 1946 until her death in 2009. He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Lyon Davis and husband Joe Davis of the home, and Brenda Schmotzer and husband Dave Schmotzer of Hartsville, South Carolina. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Dustin Davis of Plano, Texas, Damon Davis of Houston, Texas and Amy Carlock of Joshua, Texas and two great grandchildren, Bailey Carlock and Jaden Trojacek, and two great great grandchildren Rylan Brown and Jaxon Smith. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Pamela Yvonne Lyon.
