Charlie Cheek

Charlie Frances Adair Cheek passed away on January 3, 2011, at the age of 95 years. She was born on December 18, 1915, in Rio Vista, Texas, to Stella Childress and Waymon Adair. She was the youngest of four children, Gladys, Pete, and Mary Tom. She attended Rio Vista School and graduated in 1933. Charlie married Barnie Clead Cheek on November 9, 1935. They eventually made their home is Corpus Christi, but returned to in Godley in 1978. In 2004, she moved to Pflugerville, Texas.

Charlie loved playing and watching sports. She was especially excited to watch the Rangers participate in the World Series this year. She played and coached softball, played and officiated basketball, and even participated in the Senior Games for Life in 2010, winning the wheelchair race at the age of 94. She loved to fish and shared that love as often as she could with her grandchildren. She treasured a good game of Yahtzee or Skip Bo with her grandkids. Most of all she enjoyed time with her family. Nothing would light up her face more than a visit from her grands or great grands.

While living in Godley, Charlie was an active member in the Godley Community Service Club, honorary member of the Godley Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Godley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clead in 1996. She is survived by her son Clead Adair Cheek and wife Patricia of Brock, Texas, her daughter Sandra Kay Gustafson and husband Vance, of Pflugerville, Texas. She is also survived by five grandchildren Cyndi Cartelli and husband Vinny, of Gulf Port, Florida, Stacy Miller and husband Kyle, of Sabinal, Texas, Brad Gustafson and wife Amanda, of Thrall, Texas, Jodi Fleming and husband Paul, of Kerrville, Texas, and Brooke Bradford and husband Steven, of Thrall, Texas. He great grandchildren include Haley, Mason, Sarah, Mattie, Tate, Tucker, Ty and Jack.
The family extends sincere thanks goes to the Pflugerville Care Center staff for providing Mom with love and care the last 14 months. Also we thank Carol Gilbert and Elysee Kirkland for their love and support while Mom was in her home.

Charlie's family will receive friends on Thursday, January 6, 2011, from 6-8 pm at Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home in Cleburne, Texas. Services will be held at 2:00 Friday, January 7, 2011, at First Baptist church of Godley with interment at the Godley Cemetery.
