Clifton Matthews

Services for Clifton C. "Sunday" Matthews, 88, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Rev. Bill Shibler and Dr. Joe Stephens will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clif Matthews, Chris Matthews, Kelly Moore, Dale Cloer, Steve Cloer, John David Moore, Kent Matthews and Cassie Moore.
Clifton C. "Sunday" Matthews passed away Sunday, June 24, 2007 in Meridian. He was born February 9, 1919 in Keene, Texas to Clifton Thomas and Mabel Clair Hawpe Matthews. He married Mattie B. Holtsman in June 29, 1938 in Cleburne.
Mr. Matthews worked for Wal-Mart for 18 years after retirement from Santa Fe Railroad, after 37 years of service. He served in the US Army Pacific Theater WWII , and served as Scout Master for many years. He lived in Cleburne and Keene most of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing . He was a member of Carmans Local Union and was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Matthews was affectionately known by his grandchildren as "Gran".
Clifton C. Matthews is survived by his daughter, Betty Moore and husband Jesse of Cleburne; son, Tony Matthews and wife Linda of Meridian; sisters, Merita Long and husband Bob of Richardson and Jeanie Pullen of California; 6 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie B. Matthews on March 31, 2001 and granddaughter, Melissia Cloer on August 14, 2005.
