Services for Derrell Palmer, 86, of Cleburne, will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, Cleburne. Dr. Robert Herzig will officiate and Mr. Vinsen Faris will be the eulogist. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bruce Alford, W.G. Blackmon, J.H. Brothers, Jerry Cash, Bill Crawford, Bill Davis, Don Davis, Wade Gilliam, Dewey James, Frank Medanich, George Philp, Bill Shepperd and James Woodfin.
Derrell was born on August, 27, 1922 in Breckenridge, Texas to Edd F. and Ora Keese Palmer. He graduated from Albany, TX High School and went to TCU, where he excelled in football and made the Look Magazine All-America Team in 1943, the year he graduated.
After graduation, he went into the Marine Officer's Candidate School, graduating as a 2nd Lt. and was sent to Pearl Harbor as an MP, where he served for 2 1/2 years.
After the service, he was drafted by the New York Yankee football team. While playing with them, he met Barbara Scott of Cleburne, through TCU friends. They were married on October 12, 1947 in NY city. In 1949, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns and was with them until 1953, during which time the Browns were World Champions in 1950. He also played in championship games in 1951, 1952 and 1953. He was inducted into the TCU Hall of Fame in 1978.
He and Barbara returned to Texas to raise their children and Derrell opened the first Sherwin-Williams store in Cleburne and after many moves to different cities and states, he retired as an Area Manager in 1985, after being with the company for 32 years.
When he returned to Cleburne, he immediately became a part of the community, serving on the City Council, President of the Cleburne Lions Club, President of the Cleburne Christian Business Men's Club and serving for six years on the board of Meals on Wheels. Derrell was a 32nd degree Mason and a long time member of First Methodist Church, where he had taught Sunday School Class and had been Chairman of the Board of Stewards.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wendell. Survivors include his wife, Barbara S. Palmer; son, Derrell Scott Palmer of Austin; daughter, Barbara Elaine Maltsberger and husband, David of Lewisville, TX; grandchildren, Derrell Zane Maltsberger, David Cody Maltsberger and Lindsay Leigh Maltzberger all of the Dallas area.
