Dorothy Burt

Dorothy Jean Ratliff Burt, 89, of Cleburne passed away January 11, 2018 in Cleburne. A celebration of her life, along with her husband, C.L. ‘Jerry’ Burt will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Crosier-Pearson chapel. The Reverend John Glover will officiate with Darrell Miles assisting. Burial will be private.

Dorothy was born November 28, 1928 in Blum, Texas the youngest of 6 children to John R. Houston Ratliff and Effie Leona (Burdett) Ratliff. She married Jerry Burt on October 3, 1947 in Cleburne and he preceded her in death on November 17, 2017.

Upon graduation from O’Donnell High School, Dorothy was employed for a short time as a telephone operator in Cleburne. It was through a fellow operator that she was introduced to Jerry. They were married for 70 years.

Dorothy enjoyed a long career in the apparel manufacturing industry with Walls Mfg. and later with Lorch Westway where she spent 41 years, beginning on the bundle table and reaching the position of district manager. She had the privilege of training under the best, Ms. Nina Baker. Dorothy was the master of a sewing machine. She sewed without patterns creating one-of-a-kind garments made simply with the love of a devoted mother.

She was a fierce competitor and greatly enjoyed the game of golf with the ladies at Riverview Country Club. She would grind as hard over her fourth putt as her first. She loved to fish and truth be known, she was the better fisherman of she and Jerry, much to his chagrin.

Dorothy was a longtime member of Henderson Street Baptist Church; however, she and Jerry had attended services at Field Street Baptist until her illness.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Helen Benson and Dessie Walling and three brothers, Marvin Ratliff, James B. Ratliff and Lonnie E. Ratliff.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robby Wallace; brother-in-law, Melvin H. ‘Sonny’ Burt and sister-in-law, Madine Burt; cousin, T.D. Lancaster; nephew, Lonnie E. Ratliff, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews; dear friend, Martha Wingate; and grand-dog, Blossom.
