Evelyn Leffler Thomson passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in St. Maries, Idaho. She was born October 27, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois to Elder George and Pearl Leffler. She lived her early life in Illinois and Iowa where her Father was pastor to several churches. She spent her summers in Wisconsin staying at her Grandfather's farm. Evelyn's family moved to the South due to a younger brother's health and she started her teen years living in Texas. While a freshman at Southwestern Jr. College she met her future husband George (Smokey) Thomson. They married June 16, 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee. World War II started that same year and Evelyn moved to her Mother's home while Smokey was serving in the Pacific. At the end of the war, the GI bill presented new possibilities to them and they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska while Smokey finished college and his Masters. In 1949 they moved to Loveland, Colorado and it was there they had their 2 children. Two years later the family moved to Keene, Texas where for 13 years Evelyn worked as office manager of Harris Pine Furniture in Cleburne, Texas. In 1965, the family returned to Lincoln, Nebraska and for 16 years Evelyn worked in the Student Aid Department of Union College. At 65 years old when many of their friends were retiring they instead chose to move to Indonesia and work as missionaries at Indonesia Adventist University where they lived for 3 years.
Evelyn and Smokey retired to Keene, Texas and except for a 6 month stint of living in Singapore, Keene remained their home. Evelyn loved to travel and visited many countries throughout Asia, Europe and Africa. She was known as a gracious hostess and always had enough food to serve the many friends Smokey or her children invited home for meal or lodging.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Smokey; her brother, George Leffler and grandson Jeremy Thomson as well as other family and friends. She is survived by her children, John (Bobbye Childers), Mary Jo (Marc Brand);grandchildren, Brenna Thomson, Hank and Ben Brand, and her siblings, Ruth Sonsel, Dorothy Jenkins, Charles Leffler and many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank Hospice of Benewah County and Valley Vista Care Center for all the loving care and kindness they have given to our Mother this last year. Because of you, her life was made easier.
