Florence Oleta Scott, 94, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2014. Her funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 2, 2014 in the First Baptist Church of Godley. She will be “laid to rest “at Benbrook Cemetery beside her husband. Pallbearers will be Marc Strobel, Jeffery Scott, Terry Scott, Cory Chandler, Brad Warren, and Rick Hempel. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 P.M., Friday, at the funeral home.
Florence Oleta Skinner Scott was born February 9, 1920 in Quitman, Texas to G.B. and Mattie Small Skinner. She was the youngest of eight children and all of her brothers and sisters have preceded her in death.
The family moved to Johnson County, about four miles south of Cleburne when Florence was three years old. They later moved to Godley, and Godley was the first school Florence attended.
Florence married W.V. “Trude” Scott on September 1, 1935. They had six children, three (two sons and a daughter) who have gone on to be with the Lord. Mr. Scott preceded her in death on January 1, 1970 after 34 years of marriage. Florence moved from Benbrook, Texas, where she had lived for 25 years, to Godley on December 16, 1978, where she lived until her death. She worked hard all of her life, was always there for her family, and loved the Lord first and foremost with all her heart. Until her eyesight started failing, one of her favorite things to do was sewing and quilting. Many of her children and grandchildren have special quilts made by her hands.
She loved all little children. Not only did she raise her family, but she helped to raise several of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her later years her great grandchildren were so special to her, as she was to them. She will be greatly missed by those who know her as “Mom”, “Mama”, “Mam Maw”, “Meme”, “Grandma”, and those great grandkids who knew her as “Mams”.
Florence was a “born again” Christian who followed the word of the Lord in her daily life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Godley. She taught Sunday School for many years and was always very active in her church and community until her health prevented her from continuing to do so. She raised her children in church and truly loved all her “Church Families” and Pastors over the years. She began every day by studying her Bible and had done so for many, many years; therefore, she was a great Scholar of the Bible, and was one of God’s greatest witnesses.
She is survivors by two sons and one daughter; Jimmy Scott and wife, Lenda of Cleburne, Charles Scott and wife Carol of Joshua, and Peggy Chandler and husband Butch, of Godley; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters, daughter, Mary Strobel; son-in-law, Jimmy Strobel, and sons, Donald and William Lloyd Scott.
