Service for Freddy James Conner, 88 of Covington will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, Feb 10, 2018 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Pastor Sam Houston will officiate. Burial will be in Derden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
Freddy James Conner passed away peacefully in his home Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018. Born Feb. 28, 1929 in Covington, he was the eldest child of 6 to James and Velma Conner. He married Betty Jean Mills on Aug. 19, 1950 in Woodrow.
After graduation from high school, he worked several small jobs until he turned 18 when he went to work for General Dynamics as an assembler and wing sealer. In 1952, Freddy served in the U. S. Air Force stationed at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Illinois. While in Illinois, Freddy and Betty became parents to two daughters, Debra and Carolyn. He received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant and returned to work at General Dynamics and retired with 28 years as Senior Engineer. Some of his projects included B-58, B-36, F-111, B-57, B-70 and the A-12 program. While working, he also attended evening college at TCU, TWC and Arlington State College accumulating 140 hours but lacking 20 hrs towards his B.A. degree in Math. Freddy was also employed by Santa Fe Railroad for 16 years in the Transportation Department working as a Yard Clerk.
Freddy was a member of Woodrow Baptist Church and a 54 yr. member of New Hope Masonic Lodge No.652 and 54 yr. member of Eastern Star Covington Chapter No.1007. His favorite pastimes before he became ill included reading western novels, fishing, watching wrestling and the Texas Rangers on TV, working in his gardens, spending time with his grandchildren and listening to his favorite old country songs. Freddy was known for his quick wit and loved to converse. He never met a stranger.
Survivors include the love of his life and wife of 67 years, Betty Conner of Covington, daughters, Debbie Bruner and husband Terry of Georgetown and Carolyn Cox of Covington; grandchildren, Christy Mullins and husband Charles of Covington, Cary Bruner of Arlington, Cassie Bruner of Pearland; great grandchildren, Stephanie Alcala and husband Joshua of Amarillo and Justin Mullins and wife Jessica of Gholson; great great grandchildren Isaac, Gracie and Emma Alcala and Jace Mullins; brothers, Dwight Conner of Cleburne and Bryan Conner and wife Betty Jean Conner of Covington; sister-in-law, Emma Lou Conner of Baton Rouge, La. and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and additional family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Marion Conner and sisters, Sarah Lozier and Johnnie Cooper.
