Service for Lt. Col. Ret. Gary L. Smith, 66, of Leavenworth, Kansas will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 11, 2011 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. The Reverend Charles E. Payne and Chaplain Aubrey Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service at Ft. Leavenworth, KS will be scheduled at a later date. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
Gary L. Smith passed away Friday, February 4, 2011 in El Paso. He was born on January 29, 1945 in Norman, OK to Lloyd T. and Audrey E. Smith. He spent most of his young adulthood in Cleburne and graduated from Cleburne High School and Tarleton State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1968 and served his country proudly until January 1993. Gary was an OH-58 helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. His military assignments included Germany, Korea, Desert Storm, Ft Hood, TX, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Ft. Rucker, AL, Ft. Knox, KY and Ft. Walters, TX. For many years he was an active member of the local chapter V.F.W. in Leavenworth. He was employed with Northrop Grumman at Ft. Leavenworth, KS shortly after retiring.
Survivors include a daughter, Brook Smith Hubbard and husband, Casey of Godley; son, Justin Lloyd Smith of Leavenworth, KS; step-son John Van Daley of McLean, VA; daughter-in-law, Shellye Smith of Ft. Worth; granddaughter, Bree London Hubbard of Godley; grandson, Blayne Lloyd Smith of Ft. Worth; step-granddaughter, Maisye Olivia Tucker of Ft. Worth and a host of other family and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd T. Smith and mother, Audrey E. Smith, sister, Gayle E. Porter and one son, Brent Lloyd Smith.
