Gene Shellhorse, 87, of Terrell, TX passed away Friday, October 13, 2023 in Rockwall, TX. He was born February 22, 1936 in Cleburne, TX to John Matthew and Pearl Lee (Hudgens) Shellhorse.
Gene lived a full and interesting life, doing and accomplishing more than most. He served in the Army from November 1958 to October 1960, first in a tank crew, then as a communications specialist. He spent several years as a volunteer police officer in Arlington, TX. He attended UT-Arlington at night for 3.5 years. He then embarked on a 27-year career at Texas Instruments as a manager in their Credit Union.
In his retirement, he ran his own business, two of them actually, for another 20 years. He devoted his second retirement to volunteer work and spending time with his wife, family, friends, and his loving dog Sam.
Gene married Cynthia Lynn Nolan in October of 1963 in Grand Prairie. A few years later, they gave birth to their only child, David. His world revolved around Cindy and David (and family) from then until his final days.
Gene applied the same passion to his hobbies as he did to his family and work. He traveled the Central U.S. and Canada to hunt pheasant and ducks. He became a private pilot, eventually owning several airplanes. He spent weeks at a time doing disaster relief work across the country with Texas Baptist Men. He and his great friend Wayne Plumlee had at least a dozen yards they would mow regularly for people who could no longer do it themselves. And his favorite pastime, doting on his grandchildren and teaching them to do and build things with their hands.
Gene was a giving man who loved people and he never met a stranger. He was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. He will be greatly missed.
Gene is survived by his wife, Cindy Shellhorse; son, David Shellhorse and wife, Nancy; grandchildren, Paige Shellhorse, Clark Shellhorse and wife, Leah; brothers, John Shellhorse, Charles Nutt and wife, Sue; sister, Charlene Howell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce Reynolds and brother, Robert "Bo” Shellhorse.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday October 24th at 1pm at the Hopewell Cemetery, 2502 Hopewell Road, Cleburne, TX 76031.
En Lieu of flowers, the family knows Gene would appreciate a donation to the Texas Baptist Men organization to provide disaster relief to people in their greatest time of need.
