A private memorial service for George Lee Goebel, 73, of Cleburne will be conducted on October 21st. Inurnment will be in 2018 in the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
George Lee Goebel passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017 in Cleburne. He was born April 22, 1944 in Roswell, NM to George Goebel and Betty E. Hackworth. George was raised by his stepfather, Ralph Jones, who was a racehorse breeder and trainer and George was his jockey. He spent most of his early years traveling around the Southwest racing circuit and wintering in Amarillo TX. It was in Amarillo where he met his childhood sweetheart Kay Johnson, whom he married in June of 1962.
After his racing career ended, George served in the United States Army. After being honorably discharged, George found his calling as a hairdresser. A career he enjoyed for more than 30 years. George was known for his quick wit, sharp sense of humor and loving heart. He loved the mountains, fishing, golf and horseracing. He loved his children; grandchildren; and especially his “Collie Bear.” The greatest joy in his life were his grandchildren.
Survivors include his two children, Jimmy Goebel and wife Shelley and Rob Goebel and wife Vicki, all of Glen Rose; grandchildren, Cassie Keel and husband Ryan, Jacob Goebel and wife Melanie, Kayla Goebel, Wyatt Goebel, Brayden Goebel and Blythe Goebel; great grandchildren, Collins Keel and Beckett Keel; and a host of other friends who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, George Steven Goebel; infant son, Richard Goebel; and stepfather, Ralph Jones.
