Geraldine (Jerry) Joan Woodruff was born April 21, 1921, at home in Cleburne. Her birth was attended by Dr. Lee Yater, her great uncle. Mrs. Woodruff was preceded in death by her husband, Ret. Lt. Col. Hubert Jasper Woodruff and her parents Ollie Colquitt and Paul Peyton Colquitt. She is survived by three first cousins, Betty Lan Sloan, of Cleburne, Dr. William Colquitt Smyth, of Tyler and Dr. Landon Colquitt, of Longview. Mrs. Woodruff was a lifelong member of Central Church of Christ in Cleburne.
Mrs. Woodruff was a retired schoolteacher having taught thirty-five years. She taught six years in Godley and the remaining years in the Cleburne ISD at Coleman Elementary, Cleburne High School and at Fulton Intermediate. She is best known for her many years of teaching civics at CHS where she made long-lasting friendships with many of her students and was very active in student body life. In an interview upon her retirement Mrs. Woodruff said of her teaching government, "I went into it wholeheartedly. I read just about all I could find. I wanted to know something more about it other than what was in the textbooks. I'd always hoped that I could transfer some of my enthusiasm to the students over the years."
A former student in a letter expressing how he had utilized Mrs. Woodruff's teachings in his life said, "Your teaching style must have been magnificent because I (in that time in my development) was not one of your better or more malleable students." Another student wrote, "To my very favorite teacher who has made a dull subject like civics a barrell of fun and an interesting class." There are many such evidences of the rapport Mrs. Woodruff had with her former students.
Mrs. Woodruff was a graduate of Cleburne High School and attended The University of Texas, Austin two years. She graduated from Texas Christian University. She was a devoted fan of the Texas Rangers and for many years after her retirement she and her husband, Jasper, went to the Texas Rangers spring training camp in Florida. Mrs Woodruff continued to listen to Ranger games after her vision deteriorated.
