Service for Ida Nell Muir Snider Ballew, 92, of Ft. Worth will be conducted at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, July 2, 2011 in the Mount Olivet Chapel. The service will be conducted by Dr. Alan Lobaugh. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 P.M. Friday, at the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home. A scripture reading and prayer will be offered by the Reverend John Glover at the conclusion of the visitation.
Ida Nell was born February 7, 1919, one of four children, to Nola and Guy Muir in north Ft. Worth near Meacham Field. She considered herself a "tomboy" and would rather have a hammer and nails to play with than a doll. Ida Nell graduated with honors from Northside High School and won a scholarship to Mary Harden Baylor which she was not able to use, but instead took her first job at Armor and Co.
With the onset of WWII she traveled to San Antonio and worked as a purchasing clerk at Duncan Field where she was called "Lucky" because many things worked out for her.
She met her first husband, Albert Wiley Snider, who was stationed in San Antonio in the Army, at the Christian Church youth group. After the death of her father, she returned to Ft. Worth and worked at Rowan Drilling Co. Her relationship with Albert continued and she was on the train to Hampton, VA to be married on June 6, 1944 when the announcement of D Day was made.
After the war they lived in Ft. Worth where two children were born. She also lived in Carrollton where she worked in the field of electrical compontents after her children were older in school.
After moving to Cleburne she worked at Santa Fe Railroad for 20 years until retirement. This "tomboy" spent her entire working career in traditional male fields. But she was also an avid homemaker, gardener, cook and seamstress. She loved to help people and was a great organizer, the perfect person to put in charge of a large project. She and Al also enjoyed many hours of fishing at their lake cabin.
After the death of Albert in 1986 she continued serving others by volunteering at Walls Regional Hospital and remaining active in church. She also continued square dancing and learned to play bridge.
In 1992 she married Henry Bernard Ballew and they enjoyed 19 years together.
She loved to travel and had an amazing knowledge of sports. She was an avid TCU Horned-Frog fan from the days of their Sugar Bowl victory and National Championship.
She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much and will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Snider, son James Albert, her parents and two brothers.
