Graveside service for Jack Ren Harwell Sr., 86, of Fort Worth, formerly of Cleburne, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, in Rio Vista Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Harwell Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Jack Ren Harwell Sr. made his final journey to his heavenly home on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, in Richland Hills. He was the youngest of six children born to William H. and Bonnie Gaye Cottle Harwell in Johnson County on July 13, 1925, living in and around Cleburne most of his life. He joined the navy at age 17 and served for a little more than two years during World War II on the USS LST 999, and after returning to the states he was employed at Convair in Fort Worth for a few years. When he was laid off, he and his young family moved to Slaton, Texas, for about a year while he attended mechanic school. When he returned to Cleburne in 1956, he became an employee of the Santa Fe Railroad, where he worked for more than 32 years, retiring in 1988 and moving to Fort Worth in 1999. He was an avid wood carver, changing peach pits into monkeys or elephants and a member of Rio Vista Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Jack Ren Harwell Jr.; four daughters, Jacklyn Gail Crisp, Kathryn Orsborn, Patricia Lee and Becky Harwell; and ex-wife, Faye Harwell. His legacy lives on in 19 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ralph Ireland Harwell; sisters, Willia Mae Creasy, Becky Ruth Paris, Muriel Burroughs and Edna Pollard; and his youngest son, James Glenn Harwell.
