Janet Jacqueline (Jackie) Hughes Calahan passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She faced her battle with cancer with dignity, courage and grace.
Jackie was born March 19, 1944 in Waxahachie, Texas to Jack J. and Oma Jean Hays Hughes, the oldest of three daughters. She graduated from Cleburne High in 1962 and immediately went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., where she worked until the birth of her children. She retired from Gerard Elementary after 20 years of service.
She married James A. Calahan May 6, 1967 at Henderson St. Baptist Church in Cleburne, where she was a lifelong member. The joy of Jackie’s life was her grandson, Jacob “Jake” Rhone, her family and her little Dachshund “Spud”. She was known as the cook of the family, preparing turkey and dressing for holiday dinners. She looked forward to the Christmas holidays and her annual trip to Fredericksburg with her daughters, sisters and nieces. Her favorite saying was “I could write a book.”
Survivors include her husband, James A. Calahan of Cleburne; son, Jeffrey Calahan of Goatneck; daughter, Jennifer and husband Curtis Pruitt of Cleburne; grandsons, Jacob "Jake" Rhone and Joseph Pruitt; sisters, Judy Trice and husband Sonny of Burleson and Ann Gatewood and husband Steve of Cleburne; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jackie was preceded in death by her twin granddaughters, Jordan and Jadyn Rhone; parents, Jack and Oma Jean Hughes; and nephew, Norman Dale “Trey” Goodwill, III.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Heritage Trails for all their loving and compassionate care.
