Graveside services for Jo Ann Finley Spillman, 78, of Austin, will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 26, 2012 in the Rosehill Cemetery, Cleburne. Mrs. Spillman passed away in Austin on Sunday, October 21, 2012. She was born to Isom Edgar and Ruby Stroud Finley in Cleburne on December 9, 1933. She married Thomas M. Spillman, Jr. in Cleburne on March 18, 1958. Jo Ann was of Christian faith. She retired as a Medical Technologist with Presbyterian Hospital Systems of Dallas. Jo Ann was an independent lady with a zest for life. She was ahead of her time, she chose to raise a family and then have a career. She was a certified language therapist who worked with dyslexic kids. She was certified through the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. She had problems herself with dyslexia that she overcame.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and a variety of activities including gardening, playing tennis, sailing, needlework, and outdoor adventures. She lived in Europe for a number of years, where she and her husband sailed countless waters and traveled extensively. She was one of the first women to be involved in the Adams Cup races. Jo Ann was a member of numerous organizations and clubs including Ko Jo Kai Sorority, Girl Scouts, various local bridge clubs, Native Plants Society of Texas, American Women's Club of The Hague, a charter member of the Rush Creek Yacht Club, Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center, and even serving as a judge for the Junior Olympics, to name a few. Jo Ann's compassionate spirit and giving nature will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Spillman, Jr.; three children, Susan Spillman, Karen Spillman, and Thomas (Thom) Spillman III.; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
