John Hugh Buck

John Hugh Buck, (a gentleman and a scholar) was born in Houston, Texas on August 16, 1942, the son of Bobbie Whitten Buck and Hugh Quinn Buck. He attended St. John’s School, Southern Methodist University and Yale University Law School. After two years at Yale, John joined the Marines and served his country for two years, reaching the rank of Sergeant. In 1967, John returned to Yale with his new bride, Kathy. After John graduated from law school, they returned to their hometown of Houston where John had the privilege of clerking for Federal Judge James Noel. The next career step was John joining the Houston law firm of Bracewell and Patterson where he was a part of the corporate and trial section. John also had the privilege of serving on several boards in the Houston area and as President of the Houston Club. In 1990, John made the decision to begin his own law firm which is now known as Buck/Keenan and celebrated its 34th year on January 1, 2024.

After retiring from his Houston practice, John and Kathy moved to Grandview, Texas where they tried their hand at herding cattle, riding horses and collecting more stray dogs than you can imagine. John also practiced a little law in the area and established Buck Realty. Retirement also gave John the time to begin his writing career. His book Words of Enrichment is still enjoyed by many people. He also wrote about the adventures of farm life which kept a lot of us entertained.

In Grandview, John was named the “Citizen of the Year 2009” by the Chamber of Commerce, served as a director of the Grandview Bank and the Grandview Nursing Home. He was also a member of Holy Comforter Church in Cleburne and served on its Vestry. On June 24, 2024, God called the great scholar and gentleman home.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen Steakley Buck; son, Travis Hugh Buck and wife, Erin Stotmeister Buck, son, Braden Steakley Buck and wife, Katharine Johns Buck; grandchildren, Avery Kathleen Buck, Ellen Harper Buck, Addison Elizabeth Buck and Houston Steakley Buck; sister, Bobbie Buck Caldarelli; niece, Karen Caldarelli Cary and husband, Clay Cary; and great-niece, Sarah Witten Cary.
