Johnny passed away August 7, 2009, at his home in Cleburne surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born January 13, 1940 in Cleburne, Texas, to Carroll C. Cooke and Ina Mae Morrrow Cooke. His grandparents Dr. C.C.Cooke and Emmanline Cooke were pioneers of Cleburne and well respected
by the community.
Johnny attended Cleburne High School and then served in the Army for two years. Shortly after serving in the army he went to work for Santa Fe Railroad in which he held a number of positions during his 41 years with the railroad including brakeman, switchman, and conductor. Johnny was well respected by his fellow railroad peers. He was such a hard worker and set an example to many young men working for the railroad.
Johnny married Joy Faye Lewis August 26, 1971 at the First Methodist Church in Glen Rose, Texas. They would have celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary in just a few weeks. Johnny has two children, Milton Carroll Cooke of Canadian, Texas and Camelia "Cammie" Marrs of Rowlett, Texas. He was very proud of his children's accomplishments and their hard working nature. Johnny also adored his grandchildren, Marcee, Cody, and Caden all of Canadian, Texas and his daughter-in-law Julie. He also loved his son-in-law, Chris who he spent quite a deal of time with throughout the last several years.
After retiring from the railroad the Cookes enjoyed spending time with family and friends and were actively involved in the local antique car club, which allowed Johnny to experience his life long love of classic cars.
Johnny loved his family and with most of them residing in Cleburne, he had the joy of spending ample time with his siblings Carolyn, Ina Lee, and Jimmy. He also loved his nieces and nephews very much and enjoyed seeing them frequently as well. Prior to their deaths, Johnny visited his "mama and daddy" often. Family came first and Johnny loved them all dearly.
He is survived by his wife Joy of 37 years; son, Milton and wife, Julie,of Canadian; daughter Cammie and husband, Chris of Rowlett; grandchildren Marcee, Cody, and Caden, all of Canadian; sisters Carolyn Kuklies, Ina Roden Brown, and James "Jimmy" Cooke, all of Cleburne; and an extended family of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He is proceeded in death by his parents Carroll C. Cooke and Ina Mae Morrow Cooke both life long residents of Cleburne.
