John Smith

Service for John Henry Smith, 89, of Keene will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 4, 2011 in the Henderson Street Baptist Church. The Reverend Eddie Freeman and Dr. Stephen Fowler will officiate. Eulogy will be done by grandsons, Lance and Lyle Lackey. Pallbearers will be Ronny Tribble, Rodney Tribble, Roby Stringer, Curtis Pritchard, Dale Hannah, Tommy Forsythe, Monty Dobbins and Robert Upshaw. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Henderson Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Monday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith passed away Saturday, January 1, 2011 in Keene. He was born July 23, 1921 in Brady to Patrick and Mary Smith. He married his high school sweetheart, Tommy Lavon Snell on October 7, 1942 in Cleburne.

Mr. Smith graduated from Cleburne High School in 1941 where he played football and basketball. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Belleauwood in the South Pacific during W.W. II. John Henry was a retired supervisor for the Rangaire Corp. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons, loved golf and followed the Yellow Jackets sports teams. He coached the Little Dribblers and was a little league umpire. He enjoyed watching his three grandsons play for the Yellow Jackets. He was a member of Henderson Street Baptist Church and a deacon for over 50 years. John Henry will always be remembered for his faith and service to the Lord.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Tom Lavon "Tommy" Smith of Cleburne; daughters, Beverly Lackey and husband Gary and Jan Swanson and husband Mark, all of Cleburne; grandsons, Lance Lackey and wife Amy of Austin, Lyle Lackey and wife Katie of Ft. Worth and Spencer Swanson of Cleburne; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Lackey of Ft. Worth and Boone and Tucker Lackey of Austin; brother, Joe Willie Smith and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Sharon; two sisters and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to the Henderson Street Baptist Church Family Life Center Building Fund.
