Johnnye Newcomb

Johnnye Armstrong Newcomb entered this world on January 19, 1919 and left us on April 22, 2008 to be with her Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, by her husband of 31 years, John W. (Fred) Armstron, and much later by her second husband, Frank Newcomb.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law; Carolyn and Hilton Hemphill of Dallas, Linda Bowers Gaston of Carrollton, and Sharon and Julian Simpson of Plano. Her grandchildren are Harlton Hemphill, Hayden Hemphill, Carter Hemphill, Clayton Hemphill, Brandon Bowers, Bryan Bowers, April Simpson Grusing, Amber Simpson Peterson and Jerod Simpson. Her great-grandchildren are Corban, Walker, Aubrey, Caleb, Rachel, Mollie, Avery and Parker Hemphill; Bryan and Savanah Bowers; Bethany and Ben Grusing; Anne and John Peterson. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephew and extended family


Johnnye was born in New Boston, Texas but lived most of her life in Lubbock. She was a gifted artistic person who shared her talents to bring joy to others. She was active in College Avenue Baptist Church for many years teaching and adult women's Sunday School class and was a leader in Women's Missionary Union. Later, she and her husband Fred were charter members of Oakwood Baptist Church and faithful in attendance for many years. She was quite active at the Senior Citizens Center and used her artistic talents to make others happy there. She will be long remembered for her happy, sweet attitude towards life and all who she met.


Her graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2008 at George's Creek Cemetery between Cleburne and Glen Rose.
