Joseph Ira Peterson passed from this life on Wednesday, March 1, at 3:00 p.m. at Huguley Memorial Hospital.
Joe was born to Rubye Dell Ince and DeWitt Talmadge Peterson on November 15, 1941 in Knox Hospital in Cleburne. He was a life long resident of the community of Goatneck where he attended school until the 3rd. grade. He then attended Adams Elementary and Cleburne Jr. High and High School. He married Georgia Esthar Davidson of Koscuisko, Mississippi in December of 1959.
Joe owned and operated his own sheetrock installation business for 40 years. He also proudly served the people and City of Cleburne with the Cleburne Fire Department where he retired as a captain in 1996 after 26 years of service.
"Big" Joe was a creative individual. He could find a practical use for just about anything. He enjoyed among other things, gardening, fishing, reading and cooking. The men he worked with at the fire department will no doubt never forget his spicy concoctions. He was instrumental in the renovation and development of the Goatneck Community Center serving in several offices and currently serving as President. He also helped in the organization and production of the Goatneck Chili Cook Off and Horseshoe Tournaments. Joe was a proud American, extremely proud Texan and Goatnecker.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Georgia, two daughters, Cynthia Chapman of Cleburne and Theresa Adair of Crowley. Two sons, Joe T. Peterson of Cleburne and Jamie Peterson of Goatneck. His mother, Rubye Peterson residing at Fireside Nursing Center, one sister, Joy Horton of Goatneck, two brothers, Giles Peterson of Alabama and Doug Peterson of Goatneck, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a myriad of friends and surrogate family who call "Nanny" and "Paw Paw's" house their second home.
He is preceded in death by his father, Dee Peterson, a brother, Talmadge Peterson, twin brother and sister, DeWitt and Margaret and three grandchildren.
