Service for Kenneth Owen Cook, 83, of Cleburne will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 12, 2014 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 P.M., Friday, at the funeral home.
Kenneth Owen Cook passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Cleburne after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born November 30, 1930 in Walnut Springs to William Bailey and Jessie Cluster Hedrick Cook. He married Margie Nell Horton in 1952.
Mr. Cook was a proud member of the United States Navy. He entered the Navy as soon as he became of age and after boot camp his first assignment was to Japan. Later he was assigned to accompany a research ship from Scripts University to do testing of the soil and fish at Bikini Island following the atomic bomb tests there. He spent time in the Philippines, China, and Hawaii. Stateside was spent in Concord, California while stationed at Treasure Island then at parts of Southern California where he made Chief Rank. Later he was an instructor for the radar school at the Great Lakes Naval Station in 1963. He then transferred to Bremerton, Washington Naval Station in 1966 and retired in 1968 at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He moved his family back to his wife’s home in Cleburne in 1969 and began a second career in construction.
Mr. Cook worked for Lincoln Properties, DSA, and Aramco, Saudi Arabia construction before retirement. He enjoyed history, genealogy, hunting, watching tennis and golf, and spending time with his family and pets. He was a member of the Chief’s Association and the American Legion and attended many ship reunions.
Survivors include his sister, Lillian Doty of Cleburne; daughter, Kathryn Cook Nowosielski and husband Robert of Pacifica, California; son, Kenneth O. Cook II and wife Sue; daughter, Karen Cook Tutt and husband Bill; and son, Karl Cook and wife Lauri, all of Cleburne; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; half-sisters, Dickie Pirtle, and Paula Price; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Kimberly Ellen Cook; brother, Bailey Cook; wife, Margie N. Horton Cook on March 17, 1996; and sister, Shirley Cook.
The family wishes to thank Julie and Jim DeGroat and family and friends for their loving and wonderful care, also Mission Hospice nurses and staff for their care and compassion.
