Lila Mae Kerr, 88, longtime Cleburne resident, died Jan. 3, 2013. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple, Texas, with Mr. Bob Bennett officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Lila was born May 28, 1924, in Wellington, Kan., to Cecil Victor and Laura Dott Jackson. She was the older of two girls. Lila worked as a stenographer and order clerk in the Purchasing Department at the Santa Fe Railway for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
Lila married her longtime sweetheart, Charles Robert Kerr, on Oct. 21, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo., when he was on furlough before going overseas in World War II. While he was overseas for three years in his countrys service, Lila worked at an ordnance plant that manufactured bombs to support the war effort. Later, because of her exceptional skills as a stenographer/secretary, she worked for upper management at the Santa Fe Railway. In 1950, Lilas husband was transferred to work at the Santa Fe Railway in Cleburne, Texas, where she and Charley built their home and raised four children. Lila was a Christian and Methodist.
Lila will forever be remembered as an eternal optimist, always finding good in people and situations. She often recited the Bible verse, Romans 8:28 All things work together for good to inspire and comfort others. Each day presented a new opportunity for her to demonstrate love and devotion to her family. Her motherly wisdom was only surpassed by her sweet spirit. Lila was her childrens role model, friend, mentor and confidante. Her constant source of strength, inspiration, and love are still with her family. Our beloved matriarch may be gone from this earth, but her love and devotion still guide us.
She had many dear friends, who remember her warm smile, tender heart, and inward and outward beauty. She was a generous and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Lila enjoyed many things, such as fishing, camping and home decorating. She was creative and enjoyed making crafts. She participated in Zonta Clubs annual senior citizens craft fair for 19 years. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Lilas greatest accomplishments lie in the hearts of her family and friends who are richer and happier for having Lila in their lives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley Kerr in 2004; her parents; one sister, Opal Still; and one great-granddaughter, Amber McMahon.
She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Davis of Cleburne and husband, Sonny, Janet Bennett of Round Rock, Texas, and husband, Bob, and Laurie Thomas of Canyon, Texas, and husband, Larry; and one son, Charles Robert Rob Kerr II of Cleburne. Lila has seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
