Mrs. Crawford passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in Ft. Worth. She was born August 30, 1931 in Oxford, WI to Theodore O., Sr. and Lillie E. Smith Wendtland. She grew up on a dairy farm in Oxford, WI. When she was five, she had to cook breakfast for the family since her mother, Lillie, had to go out and help her father in the fields and then go to work at Brakebush Brothers Poultry Co. She would stand on a stool to cook. That same year, when her older brother, Ted started school, she would follow him to school every day. Finally the teachers gave up and let her attend rather than taking her home each day. She was the editor of the high school paper and graduated at the age of 16. She couldnt enter nursing school due to her age and the fact that the school hadnt offered chemistry. She took a job as a live in nanny for a doctor and his wife with five kids. In exchange, the doctor taught her chemistry and she was able to enter nursing school the following year. She met dad through her brother Ted. It seems he was Teds commanding officer in the army and would let Dad read her letters since he never received any of his own. Daddy told me he fell in love with her just by reading her letters. He asked Ted to ask her if she would write him and one thing led to another. Mom wouldnt let us read their letters. She has them locked up in a trunk and said if we can find the key we can read them. We havent found the key yet. She married James William Crawford on June 27, 1953 in Oxford, WI and he preceded her in death on February 16, 1992.
Lois Crawford was a registered surgical and obstetrics nurse at North Plains Hospital before retiring. She graduated from the Deaconess Hospital of Nursing in Milwaukee, WI and was a member of the Deaconess Hospital of Nursing Alumni Association. She was always ready to step in when needed, always ready to listen, and always had a smile for you. She loved to share a good joke, kept abreast of the latest medical news, and was always up on the politics of the day. When her sons came home from football practice, they would tell her the jokes they had heard to make sure they were proper enough to tell their father. She would save the best ones so that she could tell them to her husband herself. The boys never caught on. Her faith was of utmost importance to her. She played the organ and was very fond of the old church hymns. She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church.
She loved to cook and never missed an opportunity to bake pies, cakes, brownies, cookies or her homemade yeast breads for church bake sales or school fund raisers. She loved to try out new recipes on neighbors and family.
She was and always will be the center of our family. She was and is our strength, faith, love and courage.
Survivors include her daughters, Carla J. Crawford and Cathy J. Crawford; and two sons, Jimmy D. Crawford and Jeffrey D. Crawford and wife Kim, all of Cleburne; grandsons, Nicholas and Nolan Crawford, of Cleburne; brothers, Charles A. Wendtland and wife Betty of Sheridan WY and Edward O. Wendtland and wife Mary Lou of Stoughton, WI; and two sisters, Ellen A. Baylon and husband Dr. Renato of Palm Coast, FL and Mona M. Spaanem and husband Kenneth of Kimberling City, MO. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Theodore E. Wendtland Jr. and Bernard G. Wendtland; brother-in-law, Robert G. Bungard Sr.; and a niece, Cheryl Wendtland.
