Lonnie McCoy, 96, passed away at Walls Regional Hospital just before midnight on February 14, 2009. Lonnie was born in Cleburne, Texas, May 17, 1912, to Curtis McCoy and Maude Ball McCoy. Lonnie and his wife of 72 years, Mamie Russell McCoy, lived in Cleburne the last 63 years of his life. Lonnie accomplished many things in his life. During World War II, in 1944, he worked for a pipe company with the US Coastguard. Later he worked for Sears, and then went on to Montgomery Ward where he retired. Lonnie owned a gun shop where he repaired guns, sold guns and made hunting equipment. He was a past member of the Johnson County Sheriff's Posse, a member of the First Baptist Church in Cleburne, TX and a member of the Front Porch Coffee Club which he enjoyed very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Lonnie is survived by his wife, Mamie McCoy; two daughters, Barbara Taylor, her husband J.L. (Lyndon) Taylor, and Carolyn McCoy; four grandchildren, to whom Lonnie was known as "Big Daddy", Jim Taylor, his wife, Paula, Randy Taylor, his wife Susan, Lauri Cook, her husband Karl and Larry Vereen II, his wife Brittany; seven great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, Dustin Miller, James Taylor, Jacob Taylor, Carolyn Hayes, Kelsey Taylor, John Taylor, McKinzee Vereen, Karissa and Kyler Cook.
Funeral services will be at Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel, Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Mr. J. L. Taylor, son-in-law, will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mr. McCoy's grandsons.
Lonnie "Big Daddy" McCoy lived a full and wonderful life. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
