Mary Anne Pollan Wilkirson, 84, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Mary Anne was born August 27, 1931 in Dallas to Floyd W. and Gene Kelly Pollan. She grew up in Seagoville. After graduating from Seagoville High School, Mary Anne attended Southern Methodist University, where she earned a BS degree in Home Economics in 1952. She was president of the Sigma Kappa sorority chapter at SMU. Following college, she worked as a home demonstrator for Dallas Power and Light. On August 20, 1955, Mary Anne married Oscar Lee Wilkirson of Grandview. For the next 57 years, the couple lived in Grandview where their life revolved around family and friends. Upon Oscar Lee’s death in 2013, Mary Anne moved to Wichita Falls to be near family.
Mary Anne’s family and friends knew her as “the best cook ever," and her greatest joy came from opening her home to others. She enjoyed numerous social groups with friends, including Garden Club, Bridge Group, Supper Club and Sewing Group. Mary Anne was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Itasca and served as both an elder and deacon of the church. Throughout her life, Mary Anne volunteered in numerous ways. She was a member of the Heritage Assembly of Cleburne, served on the United Way and Child Welfare boards of Johnson County, and was PTA President for the Grandview ISD. In 1982, Mary Anne and Oscar Lee were named Johnson County Outstanding Farm and Ranch Family. In 1997, they were induced into the Greater Grandview Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame.
Mary Anne is survived by her son, John Pollan Wilkirson and wife, Stacy of Houston; daughter, Anne Wilkirson Aaron and husband, Randy of Wichita Falls; her five grandsons, William Wilkirson, Matthew Wilkirson, Andrew Aaron, Michael Aaron, and Jonathan Aaron; her sister-in-law, Mary Jeanette Boswell and her husband, Vol; her niece, Jeanette Stokes and nephews, Lee Wilkirson and Dan Wilkirson. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. the First Presbyterian Church of Itasca with Diane Barnes, Ruling Elder, officiating. A private burial at Grandview Cemetery will precede. Honorary pallbearers are Lowell (Stretch) Smith, Jr., Mac Hill, Ken Davis, Jay Davis, Harold Laird and John Cockerham. The family will receive friends Friday, June 3 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Croiser-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home. They will also welcome visitors in the church’s Fellowship Hall following Saturday’s memorial service.
The family extends deep appreciation for the loving care given Mary Anne by Connie Reed, Diane Wiest, and the nurses and staff of The Gables and Hospice of Wichita Falls.
