In 1954, the family moved to Alvarado, TX, and Mary Nell grew up there surrounded by family and friends. She was an avid reader and writer and loved visiting the library. She was instrumental in establishing a library at the First United Methodist Church in Alvarado and volunteered many hours there. She also loved singing in the church choir and participating in other church groups. She worked as an aide at the Alvarado Nursing Home and volunteered at the Senior Center and in other ways in the community. She faced significant health challenges most of her life, but loved to share and serve others as much as she could.
As one of four children, she was the one that shared a love of gardening with her dad. She had the gift of generosity and enjoyed sharing the bounty from the garden with friends and neighbors. She spent a lot of time with her grandparents in their later years, providing assistance which enabled them to remain in their home. She was a woman of great faith with a positive outlook on life and a caring spirit.
