Maxine Helen Troy McManis Huffman, daughter of Byrd E. Troy and Ollie Mae Woods, left this earth in the wee hours of Sunday morning peacefully in her sleep, to be with her parents and the Lord in heaven. Born on December 31, 1916, in Pea Ridge Arkansas, she was the youngest of seven daughters.
Raised by her grandparents, after tuberculosis took her mother's life soon after Maxine was born, she lived in Arkansas in a strong Christian home, which she was very proud of. When she was ten, she moved to Missouri to live with her oldest sister, Ruby. Maxine graduated from Midway High School in Stark City, Missouri circa 1935.
On March 1, 1941, she was the beautiful bride of Alvin McManis. From this union there were seven children. After becoming a widow, she married Floyd Hill Huffman May 1, 1957. From this matrimony there were three children born. Raising her children in a military home, they traveled as far away as Anchorage Alaska. For her children, who she was very proud of, she was involved in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts during their childhoods. No matter where their busy life took them, she always made every house a love-filled home. During the late 60's and early 70's she was an avid volunteer with the March of Dimes. She finally landed her family in Texas in the early-mid 60's. Maxine became a resident of Joshua, Texas, in 1975. She owned Snow Shoe Ceramics on Main Street, until the late 70's and taught classes to all. She was a loving daughter, an attentive granddaughter, a valued sister, a devoted mother, a God fearing Christian, a loyal wife, a thoughtful aunt, an admired grandmother, and a generous friend and neighbor. She answered to many names: Mother, Momma, Gerty, Ms. Huffman, Aunt Mac, Momma Maxine, Meemaw, Grandmother and Weezer.
Maxine was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Cleburne. She was prepared. She was ready. She suffers no more. She understood this world was not her home. She is a citizen of heaven. 'From dust you are- and to dust you will return.' As the last living person in her family's generation- she is the end of an era.
She is survived by daughter Elizabeth Nelson and husband Lynn of Burleson, daughter Carolyn Kindt and husband Larry of Lawton Oklahoma, son Charles McManis and wife Gayle of Roswell, Georgia, son William McManis of Keene and wife Pansey McManis of Burleson, son Kenneth McManis of McKinney, son Mark McManis and wife Sherry of Keene, daughter Bet Elliott and husband Roy Sr., of Joshua, daughter Sharon Sue McWhirter and husband Julius of Joshua and daughter Lydia Moon and husband Ricky of Alvarado, as well as twenty-five grandchildren, thirty- one great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
