Services for R.V. Gumfory, 78, of Cleburne, will be conducted at 12:00 noon Monday, April 9, 2007 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Rev. Larry York will officiate. Burial will be in Cleburne Memorial Park.
R.V. Gumfory died on April 7, 2007 at Huguley Hospice Center in Fort Worth, TX. He was born March 29, 1929 in Fort Worth, TX to Henry and Lorena Gumfory. His family moved to Cleburne in 1933. He attended Friendship School and Cleburne High School. He dropped out of high school in the spring of 1946 in order to join the Navy. While in the Navy, he served in the South Pacific, Japan, Korea and China. He was a member of the crew of the USS Tawasa. After discharge from the Navy, he returned toCleburne High School in 1949, at which time he graduated from high school. On April 28, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Martha Brown. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, while in the Army, he served at Ft. Campbell, KY and Munich,Germany in the 11th Airborne and returned to Ft. Campbell in the 101st Airborne. He also served in the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC and the 18th Airborne at Ft. Carson, CO. He served 2 tours in Vietnam. Awards and decorations included: Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Combat Infantryman badge, Master Parachutist badge and numerous campaign and service medals. He retired from the Army in 1972, after retirement, he formed Sarge Construction Co. for10 years, he built custom homes in Cleburne and the Cleburne area.
R.V. Gumfory was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lorena Gumfory; one brother, J.W. Gumfory and one sister, Louise Foust. He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha Gumfory; his son and wife, Mark and Penny Gumfory and his daughter Shirley Sanders; granddaughters, Lloya Austin and husband Rod Austin, and Mariah Gumfory; grandson, Brett Hudson and his wife, Angela, and great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Jasmine Austin.
