A memorial service for Richard “Dick” Dickerson, 69, of Cleburne will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, Aug. 18, 2017 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel.

Richard “Dick” Dickerson passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 at his home in Cleburne, TX of natural causes. He was a native of Cleburne, the son of local businessman, C.D. Dickerson and his wife, Angie Nell, born on July 31, 1948 in Cleburne. Dick was an honors graduate of Cleburne High School and established many lifelong friendships during his successful career as a historian, librarian and historical archivist.

Dick received his B.A. from St. Edwards University in Austin, TX in 1996 and achieved Master of Library Science in 1999 from the University of Texas at Austin, serving as a teaching assistant. He worked for the U.T. Center for American History prior to graduation. He subsequently became the university archivist for the University of Houston for a number of years. Upon retirement from his position in Houston in 2011, he was asked to serve as docent at the Nelda and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation, a private museum in Orange, TX, as foundation archivist. Wishing to return to his many friends and relationships here in Cleburne, he returned to Johnson County in 2014 to become the docent/archivist of the Johnson County Historical Commission, housed in the old courthouse building. Once in that position, he firmly established a new appreciation and knowledge of our local history and our community’s accomplishments and importance in the history of the state of Texas.

Dick was a popular figure in the community who will be missed for his many contributions locally and statewide. He served in many professional academies and historical societies, and was a proud member of Save Old Cleburne, Friends of the Layland Museum, and the Green Thumb Garden Club. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Dick was a devoted and memorable friend to the many whose lives he so enhanced. He is survived by his brother, Dan Dickerson and wife Susan of Anson, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and will be remembered by special friends, Peter and Vicki Svendsen and the Svendsen family; Dr. Ben Hill and Mrs. Annelle Jones and the Jones family; Jimmy Jones and his wife, Glenda; and a host of many friends who celebrate his very special life.
