Services for Rosa L. Powell, 89, long time resident of Cleburne, will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. , Sunday, August 14, 2011 in the Crosier Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Dr. Daniel E. Crosby will officiate. A private burial will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 15, 2011 in the Greenacres Memorial Park, Cleburne. Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 P.M., Sunday at the funeral home, prior to services.
Mrs. Powell passed away in Fort Worth on Thursday, August 11, 2011. She was born to Robert Henry and Mary Lorena Jones Gumfory in Longview on October 18, 1921. She married Lafayette Fay "Tex" Powell on December 31, 1940 in Cleburne. Rosa served as a riveter during World War II. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Cleburne. She was a feisty lady, who was goal oriented. At the age of 50, she attended nursing school. Rosa worked as a nurse for 10 years with the Johnson County Memorial Hospital and then 20 years with Huguley Memorial Hospital. She was a proud and fierce mother, dedicated to her family. Rosa was a talented seamstress. She crocheted and tatted as well. Rosa's inspiring spirit and driven nature will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Frances Foust; and two brothers, R.V. and J.W. Gumfory.
Survivors include her sons and daughters in law, Lamont F. and Suzanna Powell, Michael D. and Susan Powell, William S. and Janice Powell; daughter, Penny Jean Poole; 8 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
