Services for Roy Lee "Pap" Conerway, 84, of Cleburne, will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2007 in the Bethel Salter AME Church, 106 Olive St., Cleburne. Rev. John Warren will officiate. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. in DFW National Cemetery, Lane A.
Roy Lee "Pap" Conerway passed Saturday, June 16, 2007 in Burleson. He was born 84 years ago in Caldwell, Texas, just before the "Great Depression". He was the youngest of four children born to George and Katherine Conerway. He would start working at the young age of eight years old, and continued working in various positions until his retirement from the Santa Fe Railroad, after 37 years of employment in 1986. He also served in the United States Army during World War II. He married a cook, Julia Booth Everon on December 12, 1960, and became the father of her young son, Dwight, who was six years old at the time. Roy knew what it was to be a step-parent, as his mother passed away when he was five, and he was just a little older when his father remarried, giving him a step-mother, who would help guide him through life.
"Pap" lived in Cleburne with Julia and their two dogs, and one cat, and did odd jobs around the house. He was a member of Bethel Salter AME Church, where he served in several capacities and was an avid church worker. He was a very kind, humble and God-fearing man.
Surviors in addition to Julia, his one sister Alice Sue Overton of Cleburne is still living; other survivors include: son, Dwight Conerway of Cleburne; daughter, Janice Conerway of Longview, TX; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents and two sisters.
