Services for Shirley R. Clark, Sr., 95, of Cleburne, will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in the St. Mark United Methodist Church. Dr. Leonard Radde will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronald Reed Clark, Stephen Clark Keasler, Jack Browder, Billy Hallman, Judge Bill Anderson, Lonnie Holliday, James Wallace and Bob Childress. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Hearn, Charles Seay, Bill Young, Eddie Saylors, Fred Bennett, Rick Blaine, Clifford Recer, Reed Clark, Hogan Keasler and the members of the First Financial Bank coffee club.
Mr. Clark peacefully passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006. He was born August 8, 1910 in Santa Cruze, CA. to Alvis Reed and Bessie Audre McClanahan Clark. The Clark family moved to Joshua in 1914. Shirley and Pearl King were married in Marietta, OK. on Oct. 6, 1930 and shared 70 wonderful years together. Pearl passed away in 2001. Shirley and Pearl moved to Cleburne in 1933 where he was employed in the tax office. In 1939 he ran for and was elected Tax Collector and served in that capacity until 1942. At that time he entered the military, serving in the U.S. Navy for 3 years. Upon his return to Cleburne, he entered the grocery business from 1945 to 1952. In 1952 he joined Lambard Reid in the real estate and insurance business. In 1963 he applied for the position of postmaster and was appointed by President John F. Kennedy. Clark was the last person to be appointed a postmaster by the president of the United States as they are now selected on a merit basis from present employees. Shirley retired as postmaster in 1983. During his life he was very active in the Cleburne community and especially at Saint Mark United Methodist Church. He was president of the Lions Club and 74 year member as a 32 degree Mason at Caddo Lodge #353 in Joshua.
Mr. Clark is survived by 1 son, Shirley R. Clark, Jr. and wife Quanita of Ft. Worth; 1 daughter, Gail Keasler and husband Don of Houston; 3 grandchildren, Ronald Reed Clark and wife Julie of Kingwood, Stephen Clark Keasler and wife Wendye of Austin, Stephanie Keasler of Houston; 4 great grandchildren, Nelson Reed Clark, Kelly Ann Clark, Hogan Clark Keasler and Kaylee Nicole Keasler. He is also survived by a niece, several nephews and cousins. Mr. Clark was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother Odie Clark.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m.Tuesday.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to American Hospice, Dr. Brent Wallace and The Wren House Staff who assisted our dad and grandfather.
Those desiring, his memory may be honored with a contribution to Saint Mark United Methodist Church Bread Basket, 1109 W. Henderson St., Cleburne, Tx. 76033, where he and his family have been members since 1934.
