Steven Leonard McVicker passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017 in Houston, Texas after a long illness. He was born on November 25, 1954 to Lloyd E. and Mary Louise (Nesbit) McVicker. He was a 1973 graduate of Cleburne High School. Mr. McVicker was a reporter, journalist and author whose career included stints with National Public Radio, KUHF Radio, the Houston Press, and the Houston Chronicle. His writing and investigative talents earned him recognition in the form of numerous awards including Print Journalist of the Year from the Press Club of Houston (also a three time runner-up), several Texas Gavel Awards, and in 1978, the highly prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Award for Outstanding Coverage of the Disadvantaged. Mr. McVicker also authored a book, I Love You Phillip Morris, a true account of the life of con artist Steven Russell. The book was later made into a movie by the same name and featured actors Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Steven McVicker’s survivors include his mother, brother David McVicker, sister Kathy McVicker, nephew Nolan McVicker, and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father. Per his request, Mr. McVicker’s ashes will be distributed in the mountains near Marfa, Texas. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
