Thelma Glynn Butler Walls passed from this earth on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. She was born July 13, 1918 at Buck Creek in Somervell County to Henry Thomas and Vollie Bella West Butler. Thelma was of the Baptist faith.
Thelma earned her LVN license in 1971 from the nursing school at Johnson County Memorial Hospital in Cleburne and worked there in the nursery and on the medical floor until the hospital closed. She then worked at Walls Regional Hospital for some time and at the hospital in Granbury. She retired in 1992 and was recently inducted into the White Hat Society for retired nurses. Thelma also was a substitute teacher.
In 1993, she became very involved in antiquing and garage sales. She opened a booth at the Redhorse Antique Mall, and helped lease booths and made many friends there. Several hobbies kept her occupied; garage sales, painting folk art, writing letters to the editor, working crossword puzzles and taking road trips with her three daughters. She was mostly known as "Mama" by everyone who knew her. We always told Mama that she need to write a book because her whole life was full of interesting and funny
stories. One of her stories became very popular and out of it came the classic phrase "Hey lady, you've got a hole in your coat."
Mama will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She never knew a stranger and was always interested in others' life stories.
She is survived by her son, Lonnie Eugene Walls, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Gainesville; daughters, Becky Sue Harp and husband, Boyce of Cleburne and Franci Glynn Gilliam and husband, Jimmy of Bono; son-in-law, Jack Ewing of Hammond, Louisiana. Thelma is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ann Ewing; her parents, Henry and Vollie Butler and a sister, Jean Echols. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
