Service for Truman Merle Looper, 83, of Port Aransas, formerly of Cleburne, will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Burial will follow in Prices Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Merle went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, August 10, 2012 at home with his family in Port Aransas. He was born Nov. 23, 1928 in Cleburne to Leonard Truman Looper and Edna Mae Dietrich Looper. He graduated from Cleburne High School in 1946 and married his high school sweetheart, Jimmie Borden in 1948. Mr. Looper was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. from 1948 until his 1987 retirement in San Antonio. During his 39 years of dedicated service, he worked throughout Texas and one early assignment in Kansas City, MO.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jimmie Borden Looper of Port Aransas; two daughters, Linda Smith and Susan Zieglar and husband, Ed, all of Port Aransas; son, Dan Looper and wife, Tabi of Hillsboro, OR; grandchildren, Heidi Harris and husband,Justin, David Smith and Tiffany, Brooke Atkins and husband, Tim, Halie Looper, Lisa Looper, Ed Zieglar, Jr. and fiancé, Sarah Blegen, Amanda Zieglar and fiancée, Tim Templeton, and Jinny Davis and husband, Frankie; 11 great grandchildren; one niece, of the home, Lana Moody; one sister, Jane Swain and husband, Glynn of Arlington; one brother, Don Looper and wife Denver of Ardmore, Okla.; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Billy Looper.
Merle was of the Methodist faith. He never met a stranger. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Family Campers (Bluebonnet Bells). He lived life to the fullest and traveled with his wife many years in their motor home, with the motto of "leave it cleaner than you found it" and made many friends across the country. He was a very loving and giving husband, father, brother and friend and will be greatly missed.
