Service for Von Newsom Burkhalter, 87, of Godley, will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 9, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Godley. Reverend Kenneth Coleman and Reverend Dave Collett will officiate. Interment will follow in Godley Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the funeral home.
Von passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023 in Fort Worth. She was born December 29, 1935 in Bono, Texas to John Roy and Marion Hester (Hudspeth) Sparks. She married her first husband, Billie Newsom on December 25, 1953 in Hamilton, Texas. They were married 49 years before his passing in August of 2003. She then married Marvin Glyn Burkhalter on June 17, 2006 in Godley. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Godley. Von worked as a rural carrier for USPS in Crowley for 32 years. She also worked as a secretary for General Dynamics before starting a family. Von was a dairyman’s wife for many years. She was very family-oriented, attending all of the events and activities as her children were growing up, including helping out with the Boy and Girl Scouts. Square dancing with Billie was something she really enjoyed. Von was very active in her church, teaching children’s Sunday school for many years. She was a talented artist at painting. After retirement she enjoyed traveling worldwide with Marvin. Von will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin Burkhalter; children, Susan Sewell and husband, Robert, Bill Newsom and wife, Carol, Ben Newsom and wife, Cherie; stepchildren, Pam Burkhalter, and Brad Burkhalter and wife, Kendra; grandchildren, Chad, Ames, Chase, Bailey; step grandchildren, L.J., Jacob, Matt, Lauren and Reagan; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Von was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Billie Newsom; twin infants; and brother, Johnny Sparks.
