Services for Dr. William R. "Bill " Jones, 84 of Cleburne were conducted at 10:00 A.M., Monday Dec. 22, 2008 in the Ball Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Cleburne. The Reverend Charles E. Payne, the Reverend Gary Cox and Dr. Danny Crosby officiated. Pallbearers were Dr. Cecil Frederick, Don Johnston, Don Massingill, Dale Hannah and Gary Duckett and Bob Lilley. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Wray, John C. Taylor, Charles Stafford, the Deacons of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge #315.
Dr. Bill Jones passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008 in Fort Worth. He was born April 14, 1924 in Breckenridge, to Ord and Annie Price Jones. The Jones family moved from Breckenridge to Coleman, Tex. where he attended grade school in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School. After graduation he entered the Army Air Force, being based at Kessler Air Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Through the gracious provisions of the G.I. Bill, he was able to enroll in the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, where he graduated with honors, achieving membership in the Honor Fraternity BETA SIGMA KAPPA. After graduation and passing the state board examination, he came to Cleburne and became associated with Dr. H. C. Quinn.
Dr. Jones became a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and intermediate Sunday school superintendent. Later he became program chairman of the Johnson County Men's Baptist Brotherhood and later was ordained a deacon. Following this Dr. Jones was selected as Johnson County Cancer Crusade chairman. Later he was asked to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Johnson County Red Cross.
Cleburne Mayor Bennet appointed Dr. Bill to serve as a member of the Cleburne Library Board. He served as secretary of the Board of Deacons for 21 years. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge #315 in Cleburne in 1957, serving as Chaplain from 1996 thru 1999. He received his 50 year pin in 2007. Dr. Bill has served as chairman of the Lamar School Scholarship for grauating seniors for 17 years at Cleburne High School. Dr. Bill was elected president of the Cleburne Kiwanis Club for the years of 1955 and 1965. He helped to form the Kiwanis Club of Mineral Wells in 1955. He was made an honorary member of the Early Bird Kiwanis Club and served in the club for 17 years and was awarded Layman of the year in 1995. Dr. Bill was elected to serve two consecutive years as vice president of the Woodman of the World Lodge, being awarded a 25 year membership pin in the Woodman Lodge.
Survivors include his sister in law, Helen Jones Stafford and husband Charles of Coleman; nieces, Peggy Densman and husband Rick of Abilene, Nancy Brockman and husband Bob of Sonora, Mary Jo Turner and husband Sam of Denton; 8 great nieces and nephews and long time friend Sylvia Boese of Cleburne. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rex H. Jones in 1998.
