Services for Zola Burge, 94, of Crowley, will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2009 in the Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Chapel. Rev. Carl Schrader will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.
Zola Burge passed peacefully from this life on Monday, Jan. 11, 2009 in Ft. Worth with several family members by her side. She was born Nov. 6, 1915 in the Oak Grove community of Tarrant County, the 4th of 5 children to John M. and Kittie (Marti) Hoaldridge. She grew up in the Oak Grove Community, attended Burleson grade school, and graduated from Central High School in Ft. Worth. Zola, like her siblings and many of her contemporaries, learned to work hard to maintain the family farm. The hard, trying and austere life on a farm taught Zola well about how to make do and be content with whatever she had. The work ethic that she developed on the farm served her well throughout her life.
Zola married Robert Earl Burge on Dec. 15, 1937 and they made their initial home in southwest Johnson County. They moved to their farm north of Cleburne and finally to their retirement home near Rio Vista. After Roberts' passing, Zola moved to Crowley to be near her family.
With a true servant's heart, Zola served the Lord at the United Presbyterian Church in Cleburne as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, frequent volunteer, deacon and as the first female elder. She was also very active in the community as a hospice volunteer and was instumental in organizing special events in Cleburne and Rio Vista. She was well-known at her church socials for her desserts. Her banana pudding and peach cobbler will be especially missed. She turned her love of sewing into employment at Bradbury's Mens' Clothing for several years as a seamstress. She spent 20 years at Marti's Electronics, not fully retiring until age 70, but she always made time for her garden and shared the bounty with friends, family and the community.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Robert Burge; parents, John and Kitti Hoaldridge; brothers, Vernon, Reagan and Freeman Hoaldridge.
Zola Borge is survived by her children, Bobby and wife Keiko Burge of Crowley and Ann Meyers of Richardson; grandchildren, Randy Meyers and wife Amber, Creig Meyers and wife Julie, Misty Raney and husband John and Jeremy Burge and wife, Jennifer; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Katherine Arnold, of Oak Grove; numerous niece and nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Presbyterian church of Cleburne or First Presbyterian Church of Crowley.
