Zona Harrison Jones’ spirit was released and she was gathered to her people on Monday, August 24, 2015. First born of Arthur and Hazel Harrison in 1931, she was a descendant of families that moved by covered wagons and drove their herds of horses and cattle to settle in eastern New Mexico.
The first year of school she rode to a one-room school house in a pickup bed with a yellow-painted wooden shell over it, benches along the sides, and a step at the rear bumper to enter. Born at the end of the Great Depression, she was in high school before electricity came to the home. She loved sports and participated in softball, basketball, track and volleyball. She was scouted for recruitment by the All American Redhead Basketball exhibition team.
She married H. Johnston and had three children.
Zona was a church secretary for 15 years, was active in associational work, Sunday School teacher, choir member, cooked Wednesday night suppers, drove a bus for senior activities, decorated beautiful wedding and novelty cakes, and kept books for her husband’s business. Later she worked as an appliance sales person, accounting and payroll clerk. Retired from longtime secretarial and accounting careers, she and a sister delved into their family history, researching genealogy.
She loved Jesus, her children, grandchildren, trees, sunsets, mountains, and Indian lore, motorcycles, watermelon and kettle corn.
She and husband George were avid fans of traditional Bluegrass music, a major source of their entertainment. She and George spent many RV miles pursuing festivals.
She received anointed doctrine at Cleburne’s Calvary Baptist Church, and remarked she was truly glad she found where the “bread was being baked”.
To her descendants she advises: “Don’t be sorry I died, just be happy God allowed me the miracle of life to pass on. I’ll be with you in spirit ‘til we meet at Jesus’ feet”.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, a brother and a sister, Zona is survived by daughter, Barbra and husband Mike; daughter, Tracie and husband Brandi; son, Todd and wife Carolyn; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbra and Patricia; brother, Arthur and Austin; plus her nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Silverado Memory Care in Ft. Worth for all their loving, compassionate care and being her second family when we couldn't be there.
